The meatballs and pulsa
The recipes came from Hjordis Musgjerd, who emigrated from Norway in her early twenties. Her grandson Owen brought them to the store in 1961, Fred Braegelmann bought the rights with the store in 1986, and Pete Wagner got them with the sale in 2014. Carla and Sonya in the meat department still make both.
Church suppers and families order weeks ahead for November and December. This year the owner asked customers who plan to order to do it early, so every order is covered whatever happens with the sale.
Call 507-789-5101 to orderKenyon Market Famous meatballs
A Swedish meatball mix made in store from a recipe that came to the store with Owen Musgjerd in 1961 and has passed to every owner since. A gluten-free version is made too. Churches place their supper orders months ahead.
Pulsa
The Norwegian potato sausage, made in the meat department the same way, without the home butchering and casing. Orders peak in November and December.
Ham loaf, pork sausage, Italian sausage
Newer additions made in store alongside the meatballs and pulsa.
Lefse, lutefisk, creamed herring
Lefse and lefse mix, lutefisk in the freezer and by fresh order, and creamed herring in the cooler for the Scandinavian table.

The store is for sale, and open
The owners told the city council on July 14, 2026 that the store must sell or close, and that they would rather sell to someone in town. About twenty people work here. Kenyon has had a grocery store on this block since 1925.

A hundred years of one grocery store
Seven names since 1925, never closed, and from 1925 to 2008 never a missed week's ad in The Kenyon Leader.
Archie Kramer opens the Self-Serve store on October 30, the first self-service grocery in Kenyon, next to the Citizens State Bank. Peter Dyrdahl joins on day one; the two later own it as Kramer and Dyrdahl Self-Serve.
A four-day 25th-anniversary smorgasbord serves about 1,500 people. Change is paid in silver dollars.
Herman Flemming and Irvin Hukriede of Cosmos buy the store.
Owen Musgjerd buys Flemming's share; the store becomes H&M Self-Serve. Musgjerd brings his family's pulsa and meatball recipes.
Musgjerd becomes sole owner; the store is Owen's Fairway Foods for 11 years.
Fred Braegelmann of Richmond, Minn. buys the store in July: Fred's Fairway Foods. Sunday hours begin.
Braegelmann builds the present 13,170-square-foot store on Red Wing Avenue, shared with a pharmacy. Randy Boomgaarden becomes manager and Scott Miner head of the meat department.
Full remodel. The pharmacy sells at the end of 2013 and the grocery takes over its space.
Father and son Dan and Pete Wagner buy Fred's Hometown Market in November through Wagner Foods Inc., then in eight small-town stores across southern Minnesota and Iowa, and rename it Kenyon Market. Dan Wagner was the Minnesota Grocers Association's 2010 Outstanding Grocer.
LED lighting, new flooring, closed-door coolers in dairy, meat and produce (summer 2025), a loyalty app, and the weekly ad doubled to four pages. Manager Randy Boomgaarden retires in 2025.
Dollar General opens August 26 at 98 Gunderson Boulevard, on the old Milo Peterson Ford site. A second one opens in Wanamingo on March 13, 2026.
July 14: the Wagners tell the city council the store must sell or close and ask for help finding a local buyer. The store stays open.
From Kevin Anderson's column in The Kenyon Leader, October 22, 2025, and the Kenyon Messenger, November 6, 2025.
Questions
What are Kenyon Market's hours?
Every day, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., including Sunday.
Is Kenyon Market closing?
No. The store is open its normal hours. The owner announced in July 2026 that the business is for sale and that he wants it to continue as a grocery store under local ownership. The council and press record is on the support page at kenyonminnesota.com/businesses/kenyon-market/support/.
Does Kenyon Market take SNAP, EBT and WIC?
Yes. The store's ad states that it accepts SNAP, WIC vouchers, Visa and Mastercard.
How do I order Kenyon Market meatballs or pulsa?
Call 507-789-5101 or ask at the meat counter. Holiday orders are taken well ahead; the owner asked customers to order early this year. A gluten-free meatball is made as well.
Where is the weekly ad?
At kenyonmarket.com/ads, in the store, in the Kenyon Market app, or by email from kenyonmarket@gmail.com. A new ad starts every Wednesday. This page shows the current ad by department.
Is there a Kenyon Market app?
Yes, free on the App Store and Google Play, with app-only specials, points on purchases and loyalty rewards. Staff will help you sign up at the register.
Does Kenyon Market deliver?
The owner told the Kenyon Messenger in 2024 that the store delivers groceries for seniors who cannot get out, and the state's Aging and Disability resource directory has listed a Thursday delivery inside the city limits with no fee. Call the store to arrange it; there is no online ordering.
Who owns Kenyon Market?
Pete Wagner and his father Dan Wagner, who bought the store in November 2014 through Wagner Foods Inc. Pete runs it. He is a third-generation grocer; his grandfather John Wagner opened the family's store in Adams, Minn. in the 1940s. His brother Chris owns Island Market in Pine Island, which is why the two stores share an ad.
How can I help keep the store?
Shop the weekly ad, order holiday meatballs and pulsa early, speak at a council meeting, and join the supporter list at kenyonminnesota.com/businesses/kenyon-market/support/. If you could buy or invest, call Pete Wagner at the store.
Is Kenyon Market hiring?
Openings are posted under Career Opportunities on kenyonmarket.com, or ask for Pete in the store.
