Where the money comes from, and where it goes
Every measurable dollar that enters Kenyon in a year and every one that leaves, drawn as a flow field over the city. About $83.3M comes in, about $70.3M goes straight back out, and the average dollar is received 1.29 times in town before it leaves.
Each moving dot is a dollar. Dots enter from the direction the money actually comes from, at a rate that rises with the yearly amount (compressed, so a $50,000 payee still gets a visible trickle next to a $14 million one; the Sankey below is to scale), stop at the household, employer, store or city hall that first receives them, change hands inside town according to the measured spending shares, and leave toward wherever the money actually goes. The pale curves are the streamlines of a point source and a point sink, the same picture a wind tunnel gives for air flowing from one place to another. Hover a label for the figure and its source; the table below has every number.
The same flows, to scale
Left, the money that arrives; center, who in Kenyon receives it first; right, where it goes. Band width is dollars a year. Circulation inside town is in the table further down.
What the picture shows
Kenyon is a town that earns its living somewhere else. Of 1,033 residents with a primary job in 2023, 892 worked outside the city limits and 114 worked inside them. The wages those commuters bring home, about $40.9M a year, are the largest thing entering town, roughly 49 percent of everything this page can measure. The second largest is money that arrives without a job attached: Social Security ($4.6M), pensions, disability, veterans' benefits and the Medicare and Medicaid payments made on residents' behalf. Together the government payments come to $24.2M a year.
The reverse commute is nearly as large as it looks in the other direction. Kenyon's 447 jobs are mostly held by people who live outside the city: 333 of them, earning about $14.0M a year that leaves with them each evening. Plymold, the schools, the senior living campus and the co-op pay a great deal of money in Kenyon, and most of it is spent in Wanamingo, Faribault, the townships and beyond.
The city government is a small part of the total but the most precisely measured. Its check registers from 2024-11-22 to 2026-08-30 show $5,246,158 paid to 376 payees; placing every payee by address, 91 percent went to firms outside Kenyon and 7 percent to Kenyon businesses and people. Wholesale electricity, liquor inventory, insurance, bond payments and outside advisors account for most of it.
What is not here matters as much. Sales by Plymold and the other manufacturers to customers outside town are the money that ultimately pays for a large share of the in-commuter wages, but no public figure exists for them; the page counts their payroll as a floor and says so. Materials and profits leaving through those employers are missing for the same reason. Retail leakage is an estimate built from national household spending averages and an Economic Census estimate of what Kenyon's stores sell, because the state publishes sales-tax figures only for larger cities, and it should be read as a size, not a precise sum.
The multiplier
Every dollar in town sits with someone: a household, an employer, a store, or the city. Each of them spends it, some to another Kenyon party and some outside. Written as a table of shares, that is a Markov chain with the outside world as the absorbing state, and the question "how many times is a dollar received in town before it leaves" has an exact answer: the row sums of the fundamental matrix.
| A dollar held by | to households | to employers | to stores | to city | leaves town | hands, per entering dollar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Households | 0% | 1% | 17% | 7% | 75% | 1.29 |
| Employers and schools | 17% | 0% | 1% | 5% | 77% | 1.29 |
| Main Street stores | 8% | 0% | 0% | 3% | 88% | 1.15 |
| City and utilities | 12% | 0% | 3% | 0% | 85% | 1.20 |
Spending shares from the measured flows: outflows attributed to each node divided by the node's total outlay, with the local transfers in the next table. The last column is the row sum of the fundamental matrix. The dollar-weighted average over everything that enters is 1.29; the leading eigenvalue of the local matrix is 0.18, meaning each round of spending keeps about 18 cents of a local dollar in town.

Where the city's checks went, by payee
Every payee in the council packets' check registers from 2024-11-22 to 2026-08-30, merged across spellings and placed by business address. Amounts are the register total and the same scaled to twelve months. Payees in Kenyon are marked; the rest is money that left town through City Hall, the utilities and the liquor store. Payroll runs through a separate system and is not in the registers.

Every flow, with its method
Measured means a published total for Kenyon itself. Derived means a Kenyon figure built from a county or block-level source with a stated rule. Estimate means a national average was applied to Kenyon households; those are the numbers to argue with.
| Flow | A year | Where | How it is measured | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wages earned in the Twin Cities metro | +$14.2M | 310 residents work in Hennepin, Dakota, Ramsey, Scott, Washington and Anoka counties | Jobs held by Kenyon residents at workplaces in this area (LODES 2023), times the resident wage implied by ACS aggregate earnings across the three LODES earnings bands. | LEHD LODES8 origin-destination, primary jobs, Minnesota 2015-2023; ACS 2019-23 table B19061 (aggregate earnings, Kenyon city) derived |
| Medicare and Medicaid, paid to providers on residents' behalf | +$10.7M | Federal and state, in kind | Goodhue County medical benefits (BEA CAINC35 line 2200, 2022: Medicare, Medicaid and military medical) times Kenyon's share of county population. This money never touches a Kenyon bank account: it enters for residents and leaves the same day to clinics and hospitals outside town, so it appears again as an outflow. | BEA regional accounts derived |
| Sales by Kenyon manufacturers, farms, trucking and care providers to buyers outside town | +$8.7M | Plymold (employee-owned, headquartered in Kenyon), Ag Partners, senior living, truckers, contractors | A floor, not a total: the payroll of the 259 private jobs in Kenyon that are not in retail, food, finance or other local services (LODES workplace file 2023: 146 in manufacturing, 22 in health care, 33 in transportation, 13 in construction), at the average private wage in ZIP 55946 (County Business Patterns 2023: $18.6M payroll over 551 employees). Materials, rent and profit funded by those sales are not counted. | LEHD LODES8 WAC 2023; Census County Business Patterns 2023, ZIP 55946 derived |
| Wages earned elsewhere in Goodhue County | +$7.3M | 159 residents work in Zumbrota, Cannon Falls, Red Wing, Wanamingo and rural Goodhue County | Jobs held by Kenyon residents at workplaces in this area (LODES 2023), times the resident wage implied by ACS aggregate earnings across the three LODES earnings bands. | LEHD LODES8 origin-destination, primary jobs, Minnesota 2015-2023; ACS 2019-23 table B19061 (aggregate earnings, Kenyon city) derived |
| State and federal aid to Kenyon-Wanamingo schools, Kenyon share | +$6.3M | Minnesota Department of Education | State revenue ($7.53M) plus federal revenue ($0.65M) of Independent School District 2172 in fiscal 2023 (Census Annual Survey of School System Finances), times the share of the district's 86 staff who work in Kenyon (66 education jobs in the city, LODES; the elementary school is in Wanamingo). The district's local levy is counted separately as property tax. District payroll and benefits were $9.3M. | https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/school-finances/tables/2023/secondary-education-finance/elsec23.xlsx derived |
| Wages earned in Rochester and Olmsted County | +$5.0M | 110 residents work in Olmsted County | Jobs held by Kenyon residents at workplaces in this area (LODES 2023), times the resident wage implied by ACS aggregate earnings across the three LODES earnings bands. | LEHD LODES8 origin-destination, primary jobs, Minnesota 2015-2023; ACS 2019-23 table B19061 (aggregate earnings, Kenyon city) derived |

A floor: the ACS is known to under-report Social Security, and Goodhue County's $266M of benefits in 2023 (SSA) scaled by Kenyon's population share would be $10.1M. | U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 5-year 2023, Kenyon city; SSA OASDI beneficiaries by county 2023 measured |
| Wages earned in Faribault | +$4.1M | 89 residents work in the Faribault half of Rice County | Jobs held by Kenyon residents at workplaces in this area (LODES 2023), times the resident wage implied by ACS aggregate earnings across the three LODES earnings bands. | LEHD LODES8 origin-destination, primary jobs, Minnesota 2015-2023; ACS 2019-23 table B19061 (aggregate earnings, Kenyon city) derived |

Not measured
- Minnesota income tax. the Department of Revenue's county income-tax tables were not reachable; at the state's average effective rate it would be several million dollars a year.
- Materials, rent and profit leaving through Kenyon employers. no public figure; the employer inflow is a payroll floor for the same reason.
Method
Wages. LODES reports jobs by home block and work block in three earnings bands. Every block inside the city limits was pulled from the Minnesota crosswalk (62 blocks). The lower two bands were valued at their midpoints and the top band solved so that residents' jobs reproduce the ACS aggregate earnings of Kenyon households ($45.6M), which gives $60,508 a year for the top band. The same band values price the jobs held by in-commuters. Destinations are grouped by county and, inside Rice County, split between the Northfield and Faribault halves by workplace city. The commuting year control redraws the wage flows for 2015, 2019, 2022, 2023.
Government payments. Social Security, SSI, public assistance, retirement income and investment income are ACS aggregates for the city. Medicare and Medicaid, SNAP, veterans' and unemployment benefits are Bureau of Economic Analysis county totals times Kenyon's 3.8 percent share of Goodhue County's population. Movers' income is IRS county-to-county migration scaled the same way.
City money. Every check in the council packets from 2024-11-22 to 2026-08-30 was parsed and its payee placed by business address; the totals were scaled to twelve months. Property tax is summed parcel by parcel from the county tax roll and split among city, county, school district and state.
Household spending. Demand for goods a local store can sell is the BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey Midwest average per household times Kenyon's 732 households; local sales are Kenyon's retail and food-service jobs valued at Goodhue County receipts per employee from the 2022 Economic Census, since the state publishes sales-tax figures only for larger cities; the difference is spent elsewhere, and the national e-commerce share of that is drawn as online. Mortgage and rent use ACS owner costs and gross rent with stated splits.
The chain. Each node's outlay is its outside flows plus its local transfers; dividing by the total gives the spending shares. The fundamental matrix is inverted directly. Because the model is linear, the multiplier does not depend on the amounts injected, only on the shares, which is why it can be read off a single year.
